1996 Mercedes 320SL. In my opinion, one of the best looking Mercedes-Benz ever made.

I saw a gorgeous 300SL Tuesday night. I definitely would not mind having an R129 to drive.

Agreed - probably the best looking SL IMHO. I don’t know if I’d want the I6 (with manuel transmission, although past experience tells me MB MTs are horrendous in the feel department) or that big, stonking V12.

It’s pretty cool, but I still like the R107/C107 more.

It’s on my list of ‘cars I WILL own at some point in my life’.
Also for the sake of continuity, they were still making them the year I was born, so I could get one as old as I am.

That is a handsome car. I think of this sort of styling, not new M-B stuff, when I think of handsome Benzes.
I once came across a picture online of what I think was a W124 e-class coupe, with the SL front bodywork grafted on... it was kind of cool.
I would consider a car like an R129... if it had a permanently fixed hard top, no soft top and commensurately less weight, with a nice, butter-smooth inline-6 and a manual gearbox, with a limited slip rear diff, and maybe a few AMG appearance and handling upgrades. A V12 is nice... but again, the weight... Besides, the old 300SL was a killer with a straight-6.1
And by less weight, I truly mean LESS WEIGHT, which is what Sport Leicht is supposed to stand for. No power top, and no roll bar, or at least a fixed roll bar, without the deployment mechanisms, and some other simplifications might help that significantly.
Somehow, SLK is nice, but just doesn’t have the low, long, and sleek look of these R129 SLs. I am a bit too young to be impressed by the ‘pagoda’ R107 SL series, and the SLs after R129, the R230 and R231, are not as handsome, either.
The only other modern Merc that captures that... is the SLR-McLaren roadster. (and I specifically mean the roadster, as the coupe’s roofline is not attractive, the roadster looks great with the top down, and still has those fantastic butterfly doors.

There was a time when I wanted a ‘94 Impala instead of a ‘96, even though the ‘96 is the better option. Simply because I was born in ‘94 and thought it would be cool :)

Agreed. The R129 SL's are pretty much my favorite Benzes. Such a clean and classically beautiful design.
